WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM
WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM is the voice, the presence and the venue for action of the women of Reform Judaism in the synagogue, the Jewish community, interfaith groups and the general, local, national and international community. It is the women's agency and an affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), the central body of Reform Judaism in North America. WRJ is the founder of NFTY (the North American Federation of Temple Youth) and the Jewish Braille International organization. The women's organization is also a member of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and works on behalf of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. WRJ brings together more than 65,000 Jewish women in over 500 Sisterhoods throughout the United States, Canada and other countries around the world.
DISTRICT
WRJ affiliated Sisterhoods are automatically members of one of the eight District Federations and should take advantage of the many opportunities offered by their District. The purpose of each of the District Federations is to reach the leaders and members of our affiliated Sisterhoods, serving as liaisons between the local Sisterhoods and Women of Reform Judaism. Broadening the horizons of local Sisterhoods and their members are very important District Federation objectives. They are available to assist the local Sisterhoods with their organization and activities, as well as informing and helping them to implement the programs and projects of WRJ. Towards that goal, Districts spearhead traveling area workshops and caravans that stimulate interest, enthusiasm and commitment, as well as provide advice and guidance to the local Sisterhood. These events have proven to be an excellent means for building close, personal relationships between District leadership and the individual members and leaders of each Sisterhood. Through the District Speaker’s Bureau, Sisterhoods can invite a District Officer or Committee Chair to visit them to discuss special problems, conduct a board orientation, lead a service, or participate at an installation.
THE LOCAL SISTERHOOD
The local Sisterhood is the women’s affiliate of the congregation. With the collective power of women who care, local Sisterhoods work to fulfill the needs of its members and of the congregation through religious, educational, and social activities. Local Sisterhoods depend upon their own resources as well as guidance from the District and Women of Reform Judaism.
